If there is one tool that is found on construction sites of all types, and sizes, its the good old air compressor. You can usually find brand new air compressors for sale for low prices, but if you are on the market for a new machine, you may want to think about locating used air compressors for sale. As long as you take the proper maintenance steps to make sure that the machine is not going to fail on you, and will remain in good condition the entire time you’re using it, you can get just as much life out of a, much cheaper, used air compressor and save yourself the difference in cost over purchasing a brand new model.

Tip #1: Understand The Operating Manual That Came With The Compressor – If you have not taken the time to read over the owners manual, you owe it to yourself to read it and understand how to properly operate the machinery. Failure to follow the directions can result in a catastrophic failure, which costs you more money when you have to replace the machine again.

Tip #2: Make Sure To Drain The Tanks At The End Of Each Day – While the air compressor is being used condensation will begin building up inside of the air tanks. If you allow this condensation to sit inside of the tanks for too long it will begin to rust and deteriorate the strength of the valves. To avoid having problems you want to make sure that you empty the air from the tanks each day, and tilt the compressor on an angle so that the water drains from the valve with the air.

Tip #3: Clean Out The Intake Vents Regularly – When the intake vents become clogged, usually from wokring in dirty or sandy environments, it makes your compressor’s engine work harder to pull in the air. You can get a lot more efficiency from your compressor by making sure that the intake vents are cleaned out regularly.

Tip #4: Keep All Of The Fasteners Properly Tightened – The compressor’s engine supplies a large amount of torque for the small frame that contains it. Unless you want to be replacing fasteners because the engine has snapped them from being loose, you will want to make sure that they are tightened on a regular basis.

Tip #5: Check Your Hoses And Fittings Periodically – If there are cracks or holes inside of your hoses, you are losing pressure and forcing the engine to work harder in order to maintain the pressure inside of the tanks. If you notice that your hoses or fittings are leaking you will want to replace them to regain the pressure being produced.

Tip #6: Make Sure That The Emergency Shutoff Functions Properly – If your compressor’s emergency shut down does not function properly you are running the risk of causing serious damage to the machine. There are a wide variety of problems that can happen that would require you to shutoff the machine quickly, which wouldn’t be possible if the emergency shutoff is malfunctioning.

Tip #7: Keep A Clean Air Filter In The Machine – As with any engine you are going to want to make sure that the air filter is clean from dust and debris, in order to allow the machine to breathe properly. When the compressor’s engine can breathe properly it is going to go through less stress, and use less fuel to produce ample amounts of pressure required to run a jobsite.

Tip #8: Periodically Clean Out The Fuel Tank – The fuel used in air compressors is typically 87 octane. When you’re using cheaper fuel you are going to want to either install a fuel filter and keep it clean, or make sure that you are cleaning out the fuel tank of the compressor periodically. This will help ensure that your carbs do not get clogged, which would prevent the machine from running at all.

Tip #9: Change The Oil Every 1000 Hours – An engine needs oil to drive the pistons inside of it without locking up from the heat. If you are running on old oil, you are running the risk of seizing the engine up, and costing yourself a new machine.

Tip #10: Make Sure The Heat Exchangers Are Cleaned – The heat exchangers are used to remove heat buildup from the engine, and keep it running under cool temperatures. If these are dirty or malfunctioning, it is the same as allowing the radiator in your car to run out of water – catastrophic failure.
